Short Biography on The Founder - Trevor Folgering
The Canada Stair Climbing Association was founded by the president Trevor Folgering. Trevor has eleven years experience as a fitness professional having been a Professional Personal Trainer working in varying institutions helping other individuals reach their physical potential.
Trevor's journey into fitness began at the tender age of 13, where he started training for Biathlon. Biathlon is a dual sport combining cross country skiing and shooting. He did very well at this sport and ended up winning the top junior biathlon award for Saskatchewan.
Trevor then switched sports altogether and became a competitive kayaker. He paddled for the Wascana Racing Canoe Club (WRCC) From 1994-1997. He ended up winning over 70 medals, which included 6 Western Canadian Championship medals and 3 National medals. Trevor really fell in love with training at this point. Training for Kayaking involved winter training as well. Winter training was a combination of running, swimming and weight training. Athletes also completed fitness tests at the beginning of each season and at the end of each season and the results were compared to athletes across Canada. One of the many found memories that Trevor had in kayaking is when the whole team would travel to California for spring training camp. The camps were held at Lake Berryessa just north of San Francisco. All athletes paddled over 400 km in a month.
In 1997 Trevor became very interested in weight training and began taking up the sport of weight training. Training at his local YMCA in Regina, Saskatchewan he began to enjoy the hour long sessions of intense training. He saw his body change and his strength increase over the next year and a half, and that is when he decided to move to Edmonton, Alberta to become a Professional Fitness trainer. He Attended N.A.I.T (Northren Alberta Institute of Technology) where he learned advanced principals of anatomy, movement mechanics, exercise physiology, lifestyle counseling, nutritional counseling, sports nutrition, endurance training, and lots more. He began to grasp just what the body can really do, and through the two years began to apply what he learned to his own lifestyle.
Trevor became quite interested in bodybuilding and in 1999 began training for his first bodybuilding show. His experience was a very positive one, leaning out to 194 lbs from a stalky 228 lbs. He was hooked, over the next ten years he would devote himself to the fitness lifestyle and he competed in ten shows. He always ranked in the top three, and in 2005 came 5th at the Fame Natural Bodybuilding World Championship.
In 2008 Trevor completed his last Bodybuilding show. He had found that the sport had too many drug-infested athletes and the politics of judging was out of control. He decided that in April 2008 in Buffalo, NY was his last show. He placed a respectable second place, weighing in at 193lbs, and less then 5 percent bodyfat.
Trevor had found a new love in 2006, Stairclimbing. Taking up the sport in 2006 Trevor found stairclimbing to be a great workout and supplemented it with his fitness regimen. His initial training began at his employers apartment building where he would run up the 25 story building four to six times (4 times being the equivalent of climbing the CN Tower.)
He then moved to Burlington, Ontario where he now trains at the Wentworth Stairs. He has completed seven CN Tower Climbs his best being 11 minutes and 37 minutes (official)
Trevor continues to train to break the world record of 7 minutes and 51 seconds. He also continues to educate himself about the human body and different training programs, which he now shares with stairclimbing fanatics around the world.
